Grey water blues

As on site apartment managers we often have our plans derailed by various emergencies and problems that spring up. One such occasion happened just a few weeks ago on a beautiful Saturday morning. My wife was leaving to go attend a fun craft outing and was walking down the hall when she noticed a *squish squish* sound beneath her feet. (its a terrible sound to hear, especially when you have plans for the day) It was the sound of wet carpet. It looked like it was coming from a vacant apartment that we are currently renovating.

She quickly unlocked the door and discovered that the kitchen sink was full of disgusting water that was overflowing all over the floor and onto the carpet. She quickly called me with her cell phone and I came rushing down to see what was going on…

Pictures and more after the break.

Troubling water boiler leak

I cant tell you how many times I’ve had the water boiler in our building act up. Sometimes its a minor problem, and other times it can be a huge ordeal. Our most recent incident had a gasket blow and flooded the basement with a good three inches of water! I guess part of the problem is that we are dealing with high pressure 3 inch pipes. So when something goes wrong, its usually a big deal. Anyway, I shut off the water and we had a plumber come work on the gasket. I got all the water cleaned up but the plumber didn’t have the proper gasket to complete the job.

Well, rather than keep everyone in the building without hot water for a few days while the part was being ordered, we got it to stay MOSTLY sealed off with a slight drip. – the drip was far too close to the floor to place a bucket under, and the dumb floor slopes away from the floor drain. So my options were pretty much: come down and wet-vac up the water every two / three hours, or find a way to get the water to drain into the floor drain properly.

Well, I came up with a temporary solution until the part would arrive. I know that this picture might just end up getting me landed on thereifixedit.com but I thought it might be good for a laugh or two to everyone here.

Temporary fix to a leaking boiler pipe

Dripping pipe water gutter! - Temporary fix to a leaking boiler pipe

Yes indeed! That’s it. Heavy duty Aluminum foil. If you find yourself having to do this for some reason, make sure you use one continuous piece for the whole thing or it will leak for sure. Worked like a champ until the part arrived!

Anyway, that’s it folks. Tell us about your crazy fixes you’ve done when you are in a pinch by using the comment button below! Thanks for reading!
